4 Ways To Brighten Your Home For Spring
Updated: Sep 24, 2023
Spring is finally here! If you're anything like me, you function based off of the sun and I am thriving in this warm weather! My back porch doors are open all day, I've been working away at my garden, and I've been planning landscape ideas. This gorgeous weather is the perfect excuse to begin chipping away at the home projects you've been waiting to start and to liven up your home with Spring.
It has officially been 1 year since I launched Lauren Brock Home. The very first post I ever launched on this blog was "4 Ways to Freshen Your Home Up For Spring" and while there are some useful tips on that post, I feel we have come a long way in the last year. So in honor of my first post, we are bringing back 4 (more) ways to brighten your home for Spring!
This post is going to be all about how to bring your home to life after the dull of winter! Beginning after you've finished your Spring Cleaning.
1. Prepare The Outside
When the weather is this gorgeous, I want to spend most of my time outside anyways. What better way to spend some quality time outdoors while accomplishing some tasks around the house than to give the exterior of your home the refresh it deserves!
Landscaping
Let's get the gloves out and start cleaning up the landscape. After the cold season, most landscaping will need tending to. Pulling weeds, pruning, and trimming shrubs - all the fun things. If you're considering re-landscaping the yard, now is a great time to get started!
Cleaning up the exterior will instantly give your home the curb appeal it needs! A clean yard is a happy yard.
Refresh Your Outdoor Living Space
After ignoring the outdoor entertaining area all winter, it's time to give it a good cleaning. If the outdoor cushion covers aren't removable, you can clean them with warm soap and water. It's likely time to break out the power washer to really get into the decking or patio well. And don't forget about the rug. Sometimes it's hard to tell how dirty they are until they are cleaned.
For decor, bring in color with some throw pillows and vases.
Don't forget florals! The greenhouses are booming with beautiful flowers, just waiting for you to bring home!
Am I the only one who didn't know Hydrangea's could live in a planter? I've always seen them planted in ground and figured they needed the space. However, I've learned they can thrive so long as they have well drained, balanced soil! What amazing news because I want these stunning flowers all over the place.
General Exterior Maintenance
The outdoor living space is not the only area that could likely benefit from a good power wash! The exterior and pavement usually needs some attention by the time Spring comes around. East Tennessee weather can be a doozy on the home. Nobody wants to see build up from water run off.
Speaking of water run off, be sure to check the gutters. Especially if you're in an area that sees a lot of rain in Spring, you don't want to spend time cleaning up your exterior space just for it to get ruined by clogged gutters causing water run off. Unfortunately, I've learned that the hard way.
2. Prep Your Garden
Now that the weather is (hopefully!) going to stay consistent, it is time to get dirty! There is something about having my hands in planting soil that I adore. Although, I do wear gardening gloves when I have to dig into the ground. Bugs aren't really my thing.
I cannot contain my excitement to get my garden going again! Last year was my first time gardening and I kept it very small, only having an herb garden. This year, while I'm not taking up much space, I am trying my hand at produce! I have a small raised bed and I'm adding planters as I go. Check out the baby strawberries that decided to make their way out this week!
Gardening is what you make it. You can start small or you can really go big! It's up to you. No matter the size, there is nothing quite like being able to harvest something you've grown yourself.
3. Start Knocking Out Weekend Projects
What screams refresh more than updating a space that needs it? Morale is high in Home Depot and Lowe's during the Spring, especially on a Saturday morning. I get way too excited to go sometimes. Ha!
Hunker down, work hard, then finish off the weekend on a patio somewhere. You really can't beat it.
4. Bring Spring Inside.
The best way to liven up your home is to bring the outdoors in with florals, color, and bright scents.
Live Arrangements
You can never go wrong keeping fresh florals throughout the dining and living area. It doesn't have to cost a fortune for a pretty arrangement either. I've been picking up different florals at the grocery store for under $10. Just trim, keep fresh with plant food, and a tip I've learned recently is to add a few drops of vodka to the vase. The vodka inhibits the florals from wilting, prolonging the life of your arrangement!
Another tip: I recently posted a TikTok about pulling fresh greenery from the backyard into your home. I cut a few branches off of some trees in the back and used them to brighten up my living room. This is such an easy way to bring life indoors!
Color.
Another way to bring Spring into your home is through linens and throws. It's time to trade the muted, dark colors of Fall / Winter for the lively pastels of Spring. I am absolutely loving blue and green this year. If you had asked me any time before now, I would have told you how blue isn't really my thing. Now, I can't get enough of it and it goes with everything!
Don't Forget About Scent.
I love a good stove top simmer. Here's my current go to for Spring: Lemon, Orange peel, Herb of choosing (The photo is using thyme, but I really love mint or basil for this), and lots of salt.
Some other scents to keep around the house include fresh floral scented candles and diffuser oils, a good linen scented spray or candle, and you can't go wrong with bringing some fresh herbs into the home. Lavender will thrive indoors as long as it gets lots of light.
I hope you find some useful inspiration from this post. It feels so good to have the world coming back to life. I have been itching for hours spent on the back porch, seeing my hummingbirds come back, tending to my garden, and working on our landscape ideas. Stay tuned for that project coming up in the (somewhat) near future!
xx,
Lauren
